" Mostly in bed. Re: "... and 5 Americans are murdered every week in Washington DC (about the same as Iraq) ... " Washington DC is the "murder capital" of the whole United States. The murder rate there in 2002 was 262 for 600,000 residents (see link in PS). Since May 1st, we've had 182 soldiers die in Iraq, and maybe half of them were KIA. Washington DC is 4.3x bigger, and a year has 12/5 as many months, so if Washington DC had the murder rate that we are getting in Iraq, instead of 262 per year, the figure would be around 1000 per year. The murder rate in Washington DC is NOT acceptable, if that was the best place we could find to quarter our soldiers the press would be having a field day with it. Nor have the soldiers in Iraq been taking it as calmly as your statistics would imply. Instead, they've been shooting the crap out of the locals, the press, even the UN. Re: "You cannot rattle Americans with minor death and crime statistics. " Too late. The American people are already rattled. Not by the number of deaths, but instead by the fact that the Iraqi people have largely not welcomed us in the country. Yes, I know all the administration's spin on this subject, about how the enemy element are "dead enders", rather than the Iraqi people, but I've seen the camera footage, and when our guys are killed the Iraqis have celebrations. They're dancing on our burned out humvees. The simple fact is that they don't like us. The simple fact is that, like the Palestinians, they will continue shooting at us, until we leave, and the governments we put in place fall. These guys didn't like Saddam, but they damned sure don't like Bush any better. -- Carl P.S. Links:safestreetsdc.com msnbc.com
