You are right about a lot more people shorting these days. Proceeds from short sales are recorded differently.
Read post below for some good commentary on this matter.
It still leaves a question of whether shorting on margin is part of the margin debt numbers "debit" or are they "credits" from shorts sales. Shorting with cash clearly is not part of margin debt...but my guess is that margin is used in shorting, those could also be included in the margin debt numbers (not sure though)...and that would make this more bullish than even this writer suggests in the post below.
