I feel a coup d'etat conjured by the US a la Chilean is very possible in that case.

I agree, the U.S. will in all likelihood accept the outcome and move along. It's the "religious nut" and his followers, more than anything else, that will destabilize the country and do a coup d'etat. It's not so much an issue of will the U.S. accept the electoral outcome, rather will "religious" extremists respect the voice of majority rule.
