I usually open new windows a third way -- by clicking within an open window and pressing CNTL + N(ew). Lately my computer has started keeping all windows open, whereas previously it was shutting them. The only change that I made recently that might have affected this was in the display control panel, where I changed from a refresh rate of "optimize" to 60 Mhz, because that is what was specified by a new 17" flat panel display that I recently installed.
