"There is a often a big gap between those who embrace the idea of underlying order and purpose, and those who do not." Right. So, take the proponents of underlying order and purpose. They found a world view on underlying principles of morality that transend the more temporary and utilitarian set of maxims; although in most cases do not contradict them. If a member of the group you identified as "those who do not" attempts to pass judgement on the moralizing of those who do, isn't there a qualifications problem?
