China announces date for launch of first manned spacecraft

Officials in China have announced the country will attempt its first manned space mission next week.

Our China Correspondent, John Taylor, says if successful, China will become only the third nation after the United States and the former Soviet Union to put a person in space.

A space program official says China will attempt its first manned space launch next Wednesday, October 15.

The flight is scheduled to last 90 minutes.

The spacecraft Shenzhou 5, or Divine Vessel 5, will be launched from a base in northwestern China.

A Chinese state television official says the launch will be broadcast live across the country.

Since 1999 China has successfully launched four unmanned space flights.

State media says 14 former fighter pilots, each with more than 1,000 hours flying experience, have been in training as astronauts "for years".

However authorities have not revealed how many astronauts will be put into space next week.
