Indeed, and it is for political as well as economic reasons. Saddam tried it.

We'll see what happens. It's my feeling that there is world-wide dissatisfaction with the US, for many reasons and not only economic, and that's why the USD is falling every day. It's not because the US government wants it. And if the neocons/Israel bring the US into yet another war, this time against Syria or Iran, I think the US will then be in trouble.
