It is a problem to operate on the basis that moral values are objective, and subject to rational discussion; that our opinions may be fallible, but that we can have increasing confidence in them by virtue of further information and discussion, as with any issue that is resolvable; and that limitation of viewpoint is no more important than that pertaining to the relative level of scientific knowledge in a given culture, that is, that just as there are some truths that may wait for better instruments or the insights of genius to be discovered, so we have better hope of moral completeness in a developed state of civilization, rather than tribal isolation. One constantly encounters people who think that morality is pretty arbitrary, ultimately. What then is left to discuss?
