Different people, procedures and administration. The parents I've talked to who've had kids in the regular public and sent them to the charter school instead did not a problem with the academics or teachers. It was what happened when things went wrong, when something out of the ordinary happened, when a situation called for judgement and sense and neither was applied. Accidents happen, mistakes are made, it's how you deal with them that counts. And if you think that your child is put at risk unnecessarily you get him or her out of there fast.

HOLD THAT THOUGHT, HOWARD

October 10, 2003 -- "Sure, people are mad at Gray [Davis], because he's had a tough economy to deal with, but the fact is that it's probably better to continue with somebody that you know, even though you may not be fully satisfied . . . "
- Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean, on CNN's "Inside Politics," before the California polls closed Tuesday
