Oh, I'm sure it wouldn't have. And I bet it's very little. Mainly window dressing. The controllers of the royal family would probably like to stay close to the US. THE world power, after all.

But they were brought to power by the Wahhabi sect of Islam and owe them. And the Wahabbis have great influence on the populace. They could quite possibly overthrow the royals in a fight. The royals know it, so they have to walk a narrow line between pissing them off and pissing us off.

And they have to keep the military happy. For a country with a small population and no enemies likely to invade, the Saudis have an unusually large and well equipped army. Just in case.
