in early Christian sects you had to be a Jew or at least convert prior to becoming Christian.

Maybe in some sects. But Paul made clear that you did not need to convert to Judaism to be a Christian, that both Jews and Gentiles could be Christians, and that was the mainstream view, to the extent that there was a mainstream view in first century Christianity.
