Thousands protest in Baghdad
POLITICS IRAQ
10 Oct 2003
In excess of 10,000 Iraqi Shias took to the streets of Sadr city in Baghdad on 10 October protesting against “US terrorism”. The demonstration followed the death of two Shias, who were killed in an exchange of fire between US troops and local gunmen on 9 October. The gun battle took place after two US servicemen died when their patrol was ambushed in impoverished district of the capital. Their deaths brings to 94 the number of US soldiers killed in action in Iraq since President Bush declared and end to major combat operations on 1 May (MEED 9:10:03).
