I completely agree. People are motivated by the Great Economist Adam Smith and his invisible hand. Socialism effectively kills that motivation. People are clueless who actually think that people will work hard solely for the benefit of others. People might work hard for direct relatives and dependents....but certainly not for Joe Smith in another province who he doesn't even know.

One thing Canada does not have much of is crime. In particular practically no gun crime even though they own more guns than we do. Since they liberalized drug laws, this is one reason. Another reason is more racial equality and a strong safety net for the poor so they dont have to resort to crime to survive. We can learn a lot from Canada. But we will never become like Canada. The argument is this country is over 10% less socialism or 10% more socialism. The one area we should look at socializing more is the health care business. If we did, we should save a ton of money. The public health crisis here is due to the sky-rocketing costs of drugs, medical care, medical insurance, liability insurance, HMO profits, etc. In short, profits mainly for the medical and drug industry but also to a lesser extent for the malpractice lawyers. Doctors in this country are finally getting behind the national health insurance idea. But they also wants caps on malpractice damages. Fair enough. Let's do both. The other thing we should do is decriminalize drugs. That will help a lot. All this will be very tough with the GOP standing in the way. But if we succeed we will have a stronger and safer society. Taxes would be higher for individuals of course, but we'd save money in many other ways to make up for it.
