And from the same site concerning woman caught in a vice:

(Speech from Samina Malik, RAWA, written to be held at the seminar in Stockholm 4 March 2001 )

First of all let me convey my organization's heartfelt thanks to you for providing us with this great opportunity to express our seldom-heard views concerning our country, our women and our existence.

In a world living in the infant years of the twenty-first century and reaching with arms of science and technology towards the star, there exists a country suffocating in the claws of political dinosaurs. In this land, the once proud land of the Afghans, gender apartheid forms the cornerstone of the official ideology; television, music, photography, cinema and anything and everything that smacks of modern life and cultural is banned; women are officially considered inferior to men and by government decree are banned from public life and denied education, health care, sports, recreation, and honest gainful employment outside the house.

In this country there is a government ministry called Ministry of the Prevention of Vice and Promotion of Virtue in which depraved thugs are given the task of watchdogs of public morals and piety, who flog women careless enough to show naked ankles on the streets and men who do not have beards of prescribed lengths and are found not praying at the prescribed times. This the Afghanistan of the puritanical Taliban and pre-Taliban Jehadi Islamic fundamentalists.
