Here is the text of the heavy surf advisory for the WA coast. Note--no coastal flooding expected at this time:
This is the sort of thing the NWS should only do--short
term warnings. Farting around redrawing gridded data
files and asking forecasters to waste 80% of the shift
redrawing model output is a recipe for disaster.

Anyway, this really is a surprisingly potent October storm.
I would not have guessed 30 feet, but that sort of wave
may indeed start slamming in toward the coast by
evening. For fun, I will say 27 feet max for our coast,
and say 35 feet max on the Oregon coast). This stuff is
a lot more fun from home, heheh. NWS is doing a very good
job on this storm.

MARINE WEATHER STATEMENT...CORRECTED DATE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SEATTLE WA

330 AM PDT SAT OCT 11 2003

...A HIGH SURF ADVISORY CONTINUES FOR THE NORTH AND CENTRAL
WASHINGTON COAST THIS EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY...

VERY STRONG WESTERLY WINDS OF 50 TO 60 KNOTS OVER A LARGE AREA ARE
BEING GENERATED TODAY SOUTH OF A DEEP 970 MB STORM 550 MILES WEST OF
CAPE FLATTERY. THESE WAVES WILL MOVE EAST AT ABOUT THE SAME SPEED AS
THEIR GENERATION AREA...AND WILL REACH THE WASHINGTON COAST DURING
THE EVENING HOURS. THIS MEANS THAT A WESTERLY SWELL OF 10 TO 12 FEET
THIS AFTERNOON WILL RAPIDLY INCREASE TO 30 TO 40 FEET DURING THE
EVENING HOURS.

WAVES OF THIS MAGNITUDE OCCUR INFREQUENTLY ON THE WASHINGTON COAST.
FORTUNATELY...TIDAL RANGES ARE LOW ENOUGH AND SURFACE PRESSURES ARE
HIGH ENOUGH THAT WIDESPREAD COASTAL FLOODING AT TIME OF HIGH TIDE IS
NOT EXPECTED. HOWEVER...VERY LARGE WAVES WILL RUN UP ON THE BEACHES
MUCH FARTHER THAN USUAL AND THE HIGH WAVES WILL TOSS LOGS AROUND.
PEOPLE ARE URGED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE BEACHES TONIGHT AND EARLY
SUNDAY.

THE WAVES WILL GRADUALLY SUBSIDE DURING THE DAY SUNDAY.
