DEAN CAMPAIGN RESPONDS TO WASHINGTON TAG TEAM

From Tricia Enright, Communications Director for Governor Dean: “Today's New York Times story, 2 Dean Rivals Unite Against Mutual Threat, uncovers the desperate tactics of the Gephardt-Kerry Washington tag team. It’s no secret that campaigns talk to each other, but these coordinated attacks from Washington insiders cross the line. While their attitude is ‘the more the merrier’ when it comes to trying to tear down Howard Dean and his grassroots campaign, we understand that the American people are tired of this kind of politics. If these guys hope to beat George Bush, they're going to have to stand for something and not just against Governor Dean.

“We certainly expect the Gephardt-Kerry Washington tag team to attempt to justify themselves. Hopefully they'll get together and tell the American people something about what they stand for and not just who they're against.”

Highlights from “2 Dean Rivals Unite Against Mutual Threat,” The New York Times (October 11, 2003)

“Aides...acknowledge that at least at a staff level, the Gephardt and Kerry campaigns are more than friendly: they are sharing information about Dr. Dean that helps fuel each another’s attacks.”

“...when Dr. Dean was to introduce a long-term care proposal in Dubuque, Iowa. Mr. Kerry’s campaign learned of the event and tipped off Mr. Gephardt’s aides, who kicked into gear, one Kerry aide said. The Des Moines Register buried barely a mention of Dr. Dean’s proposal at the end of an article about a back-and-forth between Mr. Gephardt and Dr. Dean over Medicare.”

“’You regularly make sure other campaigns know the schedule of opponents when they’re clearly trying to get out of a very uncomfortable position on cutting Medicare,’ the Kerry aide said. ‘It’s just sort of, the more the merrier.’”

“But he also paid the Kerry campaign a compliment for its research and intelligence gathering, at least as it pertained to Dr. Dean. ‘None of us is shedding any tears over their ability to research someone’s record and communicate a message,’ Mr. Smith said.”

“’There’s no conspiracy - you beat up on Dean today, we’ll beat up on him tomorrow...’ Smith said.”
