The drugs Rush is on are very serious, like heroin. You cannot function on that for long. You can last maybe 2-3 years (especially if you're rich and can afford the best drugs) then you will fall hard. And by then you are so heavily addicted that it could be impossible to kick the habit.

JFK did have back pain and other conditions, and did use similar pain-killers as prescribed by his doctors, but Rush got them illegally, scored 1100 at one time and seems to have had a really serious addiction. That goes beyond what Kennedy was doing from what I understand. Yes, Rush was a functional addict, but you can also bet it seriously impaired his thinking, reasoning and emotional health and it was only a matter of time before he went down.
