"On the Palestinian side, there is no one to talk to," one official said. "On the Israeli side, there is no one who is listening."

Typical NYT/State formulation. Always gotta sound "even-handed." Does this guy really think that if someone had something new to say, no Israeli would listen? But what's the point in saying anything new, while Arafat still squats in Ramallah, preventing friend and foe from making progress?

Why is the NYT congenitally unable to say the obvious truth - Arafat is preventing progress, and he will have to disappear before the Americans, the Israelis, and that sizeable portion of PA officials/gunmen who realize that the intifada was a mistake can get serious about negotiations again.
