Do you have any other sources for this story? The Independent has in the past preferred the dramatic to the true on a number of occasions. If this story checked out, I would certainly expect The Guardian and the BBC to pick it up.

I don't trust this source without backup, E. It is not something we would normally do. It would get the local commander relieved.
