and how is that? Was Bush's grandfather a significant historical figure of the time?

I guess not, except for the fact that he was invloved in a scandal trading with the enemy. I imagine it was a significant story at the time. Also, it does become historically significant considering the importance in American history that the Bush family has played in the later 20th century and into the 21st century. Enough said. As I said, we can't hold the current Bush generation responsible for the actions of their forefathers. It's just an interesting historical note in American history. If you don't think so, so be it.

Prescott Bush later became a U.S. Senator. Prescott's boss (and the man who founded UCB and who's office UCB ran out of) W. A. Harrimann, ran FDR's Lend Lease Program (to the Soviet Union and the UK) during WWII. Yes, the man in charge of keeping the Soviets and Britain supplied with American equipment, also founded UCB, and was running Lend Lease when UCB was confiscated. W.A. Harrimann later became a Democrat Governor of New York, he was a leading figure in the Democratic Party and a major figure in every Democratic Administration from FDR (and later his widow) to Clinton. IMO there is little to the story.

The article mentions that in 1942, the American managers of UCB were in contact with Fritz Thyssen. By 1942, Thyssen's properties had already been confiscated by the German Government, and Thyssen was sitting in either a Vichy French or German Prison. Can you imagine the correspondence? "Do you need some money to bribe the guards? Do you need any shoes or blankets?"
