Yes my house is free and clear.

But as maybe you know, Jefferson died deeply in debt, having continued to borrow and spend on all sorts of things, including the French wines he advised everyone to drink. Monticello had to be rescued from creditors even when he was still alive by donations from his admirers.

I of course admire much about Jefferson but can't help reflecting that the cultivated life is indeed easier with unlimited borrowing power and a hundred-odd black slaves to run your property.
