Borb,
I could like Kirin Brewery (KNBWY) - however I like smallcaps better. They are more a company and less a "portfolio". JEOL for example is almost 100% INSTRUMENTATION plus a tiny, promising R&D venture operations. Nothing else. So much about a "pure play". Big firms are usually a big jack-of-all-trades. Not very focused. And this is the reason I tend to avoid them..

My favourite in JAPAN BEVERAGES is not Kirin (PSR 0.35) but is ASAHI SOFTDRINKS (ticker 2598.J), the softdrink arm of Asahi beverages. It's PSR is only 0.15. Recently they guided this year to Y-20 EPS (Up from breakeven) and Next to Yen 80 EPS (up from 25). Company is trading around 500 Yen. I bought a nice chunk recently..
