GSCS Selects Xybernaut as Mobile/Wearable Computing Platform for Electronic Pilot 'Flight Bag'

Thursday October 16, 9:16 am ET

Wearable Computers Incorporate Situational Awareness and Moving Map (SAMM) Capabilities for Department of Defense and Commercial Applications

FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 2003-- Xybernaut® Corporation (NASDAQ:XYBR - News) and GSCS, Inc. today announced a partnership agreement under which Xybernaut mobile/wearable computing technologies and GSCS Situational Awareness and Moving Map (SAMM) technologies have been combined into a single electronic "flight bag" for pilots in both commercial and department of defense (DOD) applications.

Under the teaming relationship, GSCS has joined Team Xybernaut(TM) as a systems integrator and value added reseller (VAR). Both companies have been working together for more than a year to develop and deploy the integrated platform.

The wearable SAMM solution is initially being offered on the Xybernaut Mobile Assistant® V (MA® V) wearable computer. The SAMM MA V has already been ruggedized and modified to provide night vision goggle (NVG) operation at starlight illumination levels as well as additional night vision filters, readability in full-sun situations and new expansion hubs for military power and input/output (I/O) connectors.

The unit supports commercial off the shelf software (such as Windows and LINUX) and industry standard peripherals (such as GPS, digital cameras, audio/video, WiFi connectivity, and more) as well as customized applications for military and commercial aviation needs.

Though commercial (non-government) applicability is a key objective of the joint development program, the companies' efforts are concentrating initially on military, intelligence and government applications. SAMM systems are already deployed in both the U.S. NAVY and Air force CSAR/SAR squadrons. The SAMM MA V was also designed to meet various requirements of the U.S. Army Air Warrior Program -- specifically for Electronic Data Management (EDM) capabilities.

"In deployments to-date, operational aircrews reported that SAMM applications increase mission effectiveness, improve flight safety, enhances crew resource management improve mission planning and training," stated Ozzie Gerald, vice president, for GSCS, Inc. "The SAMM MA V was developed to be worn on the pilot's body or to be hand-held. To meet customer requests, the next-generation SAMM needed to be low cost and portable, yet more flexible and powerful enough to compliment other mission-critical systems. The SAMM MA V surpasses these requirements on all fronts."

The SAMM MA V operates independently of aircraft electrical power, mission-based computer software, tactical data processing system and existing aircraft navigation systems. The system can function equally as a mission-flight-planning tool or an in-flight situational awareness aid.

"GSCS and Xybernaut have proven experience with all branches of the military and blue-chip leaders in numerous commercial sectors," said Steven A. Newman, president of Xybernaut. "This is an excellent example of how Team Xybernaut partners are working to meet the demanding needs of customers. The joint GSCS-Xybernaut solution provides a proven platform that can expand and evolve as quickly as our customers' mission objectives."

The SAMM MA V is available immediately through GSCS's NATO BOA (NC3A/BOA/8744) GSA Schedule (GS-35F-5943H) procurement contracts.
