Men get a rise out of coffee
From The Times' Mark Henderson
October 15, 2003

<<It is 6:44AM in Malaysia and I was drinking my first cup of Mellita Classic Medium Roast when I read that. I thinbk I go to bed and wake up my wife! Nah! She will probably kick me out!>>

A CUP of coffee doesn't just put a spring in a man's step in the morning - it also perks up his sperm.

Men who start the day with a shot of caffeine have more vigorous sperm than those who never drink coffee, research in Brazil has revealed.

The findings suggest men with fertility problems - which are often caused by poor swimming ability in sperm - could benefit from a coffee break, and that caffeine-based stimulants could be used to improve the sperm samples used in IVF procedures.

In the study, at the University of Sao Paolo, a research team led by Fabio Pasqualotto analysed the semen of 750 men who attended the university's clinic for vasectomies, and evaluated the swimming ability of their sperm.

All the coffee-drinkers tended to have stronger and more powerful sperm than those who did not.

The results were presented yesterday at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine conference in San Antonio.

"Sperm motility was higher in patients who drink coffee compared with patients who do not drink coffee," Dr Pasqualotto said.

Euan Paul, of the Coffee Science Information Centre, said: "If sperm don't swim well, they tend to be more lethargic - they give up before they reach their goal. It seems caffeine makes them swim faster, which means they will also last longer."

Dr Paul said it was widely reported that some fertility clinics already used caffeine to pep up sperm for IVF treatment.

However, there is bad news for marijuana smokers. Research from the State University of New York in Buffalo has found the drug can badly affect the fertility of both men and women.

"Marijuana smokers appear to have impaired fertility potential," said Lani Johnson Burkman.

"Smoking men have reduced semen volume and total sperm number. Seminal sperm from marijuana-smoking men may express abnormally high hyperactivated motility."
