When the PLO first demanded a state in 1964, it wanted every part of Israel except the West Bank and Gaza (which were then in the hands of Jordan and Egypt). Is it reasonable to assume that they now want only the West Bank and Gaza, or is that more likely a Trojan Horse-- as Palestinian leader Faisal al-Husseini described it in 2001 as a first step to destroy Israel.

I am not about to defend the PLO nor the Palestinians. Having said that, when in negotiations, its very typical of the ME culture to ask for the moon.

As for Faisal Husseini, he is typical of the extremists who can be found on both sides. There are extremist Israelis in Sharon's party who are calling for the assassination of Arafat. This kind of feud breeds extremists. Its to be expected.

That's why I don't think we can ever understand the dynamics and why I think we should vacate the situation. Let them duke it out on their own.
