China's neighbors find currency trade-off worth it

SHANGHAI, China (AP) - Each day, they steam into mainland China's largest port - enormous vessels from exotic destinations like Tamano and Pasir Gudang, Kaohsiung and Port Kelang, carrying Asia's bounty to Chinese consumers and factories.

As Asian economies edge toward recovery, trade between China and the rest of Asia is booming.

So the notion of getting Beijing to relax its currency controls - an American economic priority - is hardly a top goal in this part of the planet.

So while U.S. President George W. Bush's criticism of China's foreign exchange policies plays well at home, it's unlikely to draw vocal support from other Pacific Rim leaders when they meet in Bangkok on Oct. 20-21 for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum's annual summit.
