Everyone on the international stage wants to stick to Bush, so help is a long way off, UN or no UN, imo.

I agree with the beginning of your post.

That's not the point. The US is asking UN to step in not because the body will provide "funds or troops" but because it will provide legitimacy.

I disagree with you. If you were attuned to US politics and media, the polls started to fall away as troops started to be ambushed daily. This accelerated when word of the $87 billion filtered through to the Democratic candidates' debates and the media. I don't think many in the US look to the UN for "legitimacy."

You may have noticed that quite a few countries are holding back financial help, military deployment, and recognition of Iraq's state because there is still no UN approval.

That begs the issue. If it takes "approval" to get the funds and troops, I would do that. I also would admit to mistakes. I do not think the administration will do this. It's very difficult for political leaders, whether it be US, France, Rusia or otherwise, to admit mistakes in execution or policy.

Bottom line for me - give the UN what it says it wants - timetables and control and see if the UN will provide troops and funds.

Personally, I think it's a bluff, knowing that the Bush administration will never call them on it.
