I am with you Ian. We are in the midst of a major transition which you just described. Automation and electronics are very big factors in the changes. Besides the design of manufactured goods the US excels in architecture and engineering of complex infrastructure. For example the tallest building(s) in the world in Malaysia were designed by a US architect. The Cairo subway is engineered by a US company. Note that when labor content can be almost wholly removed the manufacturing tends to return to the US.
