re:and she can't stop raving about the architecture

Pre-Castro Colonial, something like Washington DC - that's sort of funny. Did she mention anything directly attributed to the current leader?

Pros and cons........the people get educated over state tv and the literacy rate is one of the highest in the Caribbean. The people are dirt poor but blame it on the embargo. However, Castro is allowing some Canadian firms to come in and restore some of the old buildings including the old hotels. Of course, freedoms are still limited and the people are waiting for Castro to die.

Much of the Caribbean has that Colonial flavor, try Curacao - and the buildings and accommodations are much better.

I wouldn't know since I've only been to Nassua, Bahamas when I was in college and I wasn't sober long enough to notice the buildings. <g>

I still dream of going to North Korea someday, and get a 90 degree change of angle. :-)

Is that because you're hoping for the fall of long jim, or because there are unique things to see in NK, or both?

travel-library.com

Note I only skimmed through the page so I don't really know what it says but it is an oddity. A travelogue page about North Korea.
