You're right, I think Bill was on the money. I overlooked the not continuing to secondary ed.

Browsing through the great list of studies you linked, the results don't seem too surprising to me. Looks like they are from households where the parents didn't go to college. They're working class kids. The one link has its sample self-reporting that "not enough money" is the largest reason for not pursuing higher education. What I think is being shown is working class low expectations. Bright kids who haven't been exposed to a wide range of occupations or the professions, and who believe they couldn't afford college anyways. And probably aren't being encouraged.

That reading will keep me busy for awhile. :)
