Well since this is the egghead board - I think the truth lies somewhere in this article from Nature:

Given the large institutional ownership, the predictability of earnings and the relatively small transaction amounts that can move the price - it actually seems like a recipe for volatility.

It would be interesting to see if this group could develop a profile of companies like the Q. I think volatility is a clear property. I don't think that short interest is even relevant as a driver in the long run - just a system artifact.
