BAGHDAD (AFP) - US troops backed by tanks moved into the stronghold of fundamentalist Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr, as Iraqi police held a dozen of his followers who had seized a Baghdad municipal building, police said. "Twelve Sadr followers were taken in for questioning," police officer Adel Abdullah al-Chaygh told journalists outside the Sadr City municipal council. "We took back the municipal council in accordance to the laws of this country," said US army Lieutenant Colonel William Bishop. "We didn't have any problems and did it with the Iraqi police." He said US troops, accompanied by Iraqi police forces, escorted members of the municipal council back into the building the Sadr followers had seized last week. At least six US Abrams tanks blocked access to the building that was surrounded by armored military vehicles. The city hall is on a main avenue of the teeming Baghdad neighborhood where the militant young cleric draws much of his support, and where two US soldiers were killed last week during an exchange of fire that followed a parade by heavily armed members of Sadr's Mehdi Army militia. The coalition was looking closely into the activities of Sadr, who has been vocal in denouncing the US occupation of Iraq (news - web sites). "There are some very serious allegations about the activities attributed to Sadr or his followers," said a coalition official when asked about reports US troops could soon move against an Iraqi militia. "We take these allegations very seriously. We will uphold the rule of law in this country," the official said, asking not to be named.
