Ex-Fred Alger exec pleads guilty in mutual fund probe By Leticia Williams

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- The former Fred Alger Management executive who was in charge of mutual fund sales and marketing, James Connelly Jr., pleaded guilty to New York state charges for tampering with physical evidence in a federal investigation into illegal trading practices in the mutual fund industry. Connelly pleaded guilty to a class E felony punishable by up to four years in state prison. According to federal authorities, Connelly directed subordinates to delete e-mails called for by a subpoena from New York State attorney general Eliot Spitzer's office. Specifically, Connelly tried to conceal trading arrangements between Alger and Veras Investment Partners, LLP, a Texas hedge fund company.
