The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.3% in September, matching the August increase. During the first nine months of the year, the CPI has risen at an annual rate of 2.5% compared with a 2.4% increase in all of 2002. The energy price index advanced 3.0% in September, following a 2.7% increase in the prior month. The energy price index has risen at an annual rate of 19.4% in the first nine months of the year vs. a 10.7% increase in 2002. The food price index rose 0.2%, taking the year-to-date gain to 2.6%, a 110 basis point increase from 2002.
