Palestinians torch Joseph's Tomb

Palestinian children burned Joseph's Tomb in Nablus on Thursday, shortly after Jewish worshipers left the site in armored buses guarded by the IDF.

Witnesses and the IDF said the children threw several burning tires into the shrine, which was nearly destroyed by Palestinians three years ago. PA firemen rushed to put out the fire.

Some of the children said they set the tomb on fire because the army had placed a curfew on the surrounding area and blocked them from getting to school so that settlers could pray at the holy site.

The IDF permitted hundreds of Jewish worshipers access to Joseph's Tomb in Nablus to pray at the shrine early Thursday. Early in the morning the worshipers, guarded by soldiers, erected a succa at the site, and former Sephardi chief rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu led them in prayers.

It is the fourth time authorization has been given since security forces were forced to leave the site in October 2000 as a Palestinian mob ransacked and vandalized the tomb and prevented the evacuation of wounded border policeman Madhat Yusef, who later bled to death.

IDF officers said the group of worshipers – the largest ever permitted to enter the area – was allowed to visit the site because of Succot. In the past three years, hundreds of Jews have crept into the tomb to pray despite a ban issued by OC Central Command forbidding Israelis to entering areas under full Palestinian control.

Religious Jews were last permitted to visit the tomb in July, security officials said. In September, Palestinians shot at paratroopers evacuating Jewish worshipers from the site.
