Oh, definately it was a seller's market. And people took advantage. There was a lot of job hopping going on, cherry picking best offers. It was expected that you wouldn't stay with a company much more than a year. Right before I got laid off at UUNET, my supervisor was telling me that he expected me to move on after a year, take my experience and get a plusher spot. I was like "hell no! this job rocks!" Then the bean counters in Ohio axed me. The irony! :P

Now it's a buyers market and the shoe is on the other foot. Salaries are deflating, and responsibilities are growing. Employers are asking for more work for less pay, and the bar to get into the game is a lot higher. The days when someone like me without a CS degree can get in and mix it up are over, I think.
