I think you're probably right, but I wouldn't count on any big push from Microsoft either, at least until Longhorn. IMO, Microsoft would be able to generate a lot of PC enthusiasm by using AMD64 as a catalyst, but things like volume availability and Intel could be significant barriers to that approach. If Intel does have a Win32-compatible 64-bit extension approach coming out, then a push to 64-bit from Microsoft might take a couple years to materialize.
