Republican (coward) Representative calls soldiers' deaths in Iraq incidental. State Democrats Blast Republican Nethercutt for Anti-Soldier Comment

October 15, 2003, Summary: When Republican US Representative George Nethercutt attacked the memory of US soldiers killed in Iraq (see story posted earlier today), Democrats quickly responded that Nethercutt was out of line. Will Nethercutt apologize for his shameful comments? Nethercutt claims "he knows firsthand the sacrifice of American soldiers." That can't be true because Nethercutt avoided military service during the Vietnam War ...

Olympia, Washington (AP) - State Democrats have blistered Republican U.S. Rep. George Nethercutt for saying Iraq's reconstruction is "a better and more important story than losing a couple of soldiers every day."
Democratic state Chairman Paul Berendt said Nethercutt has turned into "an administration shill who insults the service of the men and women brave enough to serve their country."

Nethercutt replied that his remarks had been mischaracterized. He said he knows firsthand the sacrifice of American soldiers and deplores the continuing violence in Iraq.

The Spokane congressman, best known for knocking off the sitting speaker of the U.S. House, Tom Foley, in 1994, told a University of Washington forum Monday that "the story of what we've done in the postwar period is remarkable," better than the news media are portraying.

"It is a better and more important story than losing a couple of soldiers every day," he told his audience, while adding he did not want any more soldiers to die.

After the remarks were published yesterday, the state Democratic Party declared Nethercutt was "insulting the service of hundreds of U.S. service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country."

Nethercutt is running for the U.S. Senate seat held by two-term incumbent Democrat Patty Murray.

Nethercutt is part of a White House public relations offensive, the Democratic party said in a statement released by Berendt.

"Yesterday, it was George Nethercutt's turn to sell the administration's failing Iraq policy," the party said. "But as he tried to marginalize the loss of hundreds of U.S. soldiers, Nethercutt insulted the memory of those who have died."

Nethercutt replied, "It is unfortunate that some have chosen to mischaracterize my comments yesterday at the University of Washington. I just returned from Baghdad and Mosul, where I learned first hand of the personal sacrifices our troops are making in defense of the emerging democracy in Iraq.

"Their successes on the battlefield and in winning the hearts and minds of the average Iraqi are woefully underreported by the media. ...

"I deplore the ongoing violence in Iraq and attacks on American service members are reprehensible."

Nethercutt said the news media need to tell the "story of hope and promise, the rebirth of a country ... even as we pray for the families that have lost loved ones in Iraq.

"I support efforts to win the peace now that we have won the war. The faster we restore basic services and establish a sovereign government, the faster we can bring our own troops back home safely."

Nethercutt spokeswoman April Gentry said the UW appearance was scheduled well before the White House began speaking out about reconstruction, and that the congressman's comments were not part of a coordinated effort.
