SCHWALBACH, Germany -- Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. made a net income of 1.84 trillion won in the third quarter (about US$1.57 billion) on sales revenue that exceeded 11.26 trillion won (about US$9.6 billion), the company said Friday (October 17, 2003). Samsung's memory chip, mobile telephone, and liquid crystal display divisions all set quarterly revenue records.

Revenue for the memory division grew 40 percent to 2.55 trillion won (about US$2.17 billion), thanks to an increase in flash memory sales.

The Telecommunication Network Business, which includes the mobile phone division, enjoyed 17.7 percent revenue growth to total 3.74 trillion won (about US$3.19 billion). Demand for high-end handsets with color screens, cameras and camcorder functions drove unit sales up by 25 percent, or 15 million units, over the second quarter, Samsung reported. Similarly sales for the TFT LCD division increased by 26 percent, reaching 1.4 trillion won (about US$1.2 billion).

The company commented that the strong performance is the more noteworthy because it was achieved despite a plummeting dollar value, soaring oil prices, and faltering domestic consumption.
