I just wonder how many oh so screwed my generation take the parents money and put them on medicaid and then into a nursing home vs taking care of them at home like they did with their parents....

It seems like a passage of right to grab the money and put the parents on welfare for the state to pick up the tab.. see it all the time...

Lizzy, re: Social Security. Remember FDR? History of Social Security - Thank or toss water balloons at FDR, who started it. Democrat of course.

ssa.gov

ssa.gov

Including notes from the Presidents over the years....Don't forget the US House and US Senate was Democrat controlled for 40 years prior to 1994.

This will be of interest!!! Looks like it isn't the old folks who are the culprits......(and who BTW, paid into the program since its inception in 1934........)

Also of note: Check the SS and SSI time table over the years...........

From 1940, when slightly more than 222,000 people received monthly Social Security benefits, until today, when almost 45 million people receive such benefits, Social Security has grown steadily. And Social Security benefits provide income security not just to the elderly. Nearly 1 in 3 beneficiaries are not retirees.

The SSI program, meanwhile, provides needed income support to over 6 million recipients, 31% of whom are aged individuals; 56% disabled adults; and 13% disabled children.

Another interesting site re Social Security.......

A Brief History of Social Security

When first adopted, social security covered about 60 percent of the work force. Over the years, it has expanded coverage to include the self-employed, many state and local government employees, federal workers, and employees of nonprofit organizations. Today, approximately 95 percent of all workers are covered by social security.

The program was designed to be a self-supporting federal program, financed with payroll taxes and providing not just retirement income, but a host of other insurance programs as well. There are four distinct types of benefits provided: >>>>>>>>>> Cont'd>>>>>

Per Lizzy: I think the elderly are ripping off the young in terms of tax strategy in the US so I don't really agree with your "we had to walk 20 miles to school" analogy. Just FYI.

If the older folks want to lecture the younger generation about wanting everything now, they should try to figure out how to fund their own medical care and tax cuts, and in Californias case, their own police and fire costs and other state provided services, rather than lump their costs onto their kids, which is the typical MO. I am 40 so my generation is a bit of the problem but the people that work for me are oh-so-screwed by my parents generation.
