History of Social Security - Thank or toss water balloons at FDR, who started it. Democrat of course.ssa.gov ssa.gov Including notes from the Presidents over the years....Don't forget the US House and US Senate was Democrat controlled for 40 years prior to 1994. This will be of interest!!! Looks like it isn't the old folks who are the culprits......(and who BTW, paid into the program since its inception in 1934........) Also of note: Check the SS and SSI time table over the years...........From 1940, when slightly more than 222,000 people received monthly Social Security benefits, until today, when almost 45 million people receive such benefits, Social Security has grown steadily. And Social Security benefits provide income security not just to the elderly. Nearly 1 in 3 beneficiaries are not retirees. Just FYI. If the older folks want to lecture the younger generation about wanting everything now, they should try to figure out how to fund their own medical care and tax cuts, and in Californias case, their own police and fire costs and other state provided services, rather than lump their costs onto their kids, which is the typical MO. I am 40 so my generation is a bit of the problem but the people that work for me are oh-so-screwed by my parents generation.
