The US is supposed to be a secular country. When we truly are, I think we are at our most benevolent. I don't think any atheistic country could be benevolent, any more than a religious country- getting in to the mind control business, as regards religious faith, is never benevolent, and starts your country off as tyrannical, in at least that one respect- other respects usually follow.

Secular how? The church is still a major influence in the lives of the individual citizen, and that reflects itself in the way society operates.
