odd they still live here then

People make their life choices based on a slew of reasons and not just one factor. So while they may feel the American women are not living as good of a life as they had back home, they are very happy about the quality of health care and the options open to their children. They are also happy about the money they (as a family) earns, especially since they can save enough to send back home or buy property back there. As a good general rule, American work harder than most places in the world. This is reflected both in the hours of work and in the pace of work. For the most parts, American earn a better physical living standard than other places in the world. This higher "standard of living" does not necessarily translate into better enjoyment of life. IMO, these women were commenting on a more specific case of this general fact.

In many parts of the east, women are given preferential treatments in the society. This is more of an unspoken rule than a written one. For example, companies routinely make broad attendance allowances so the woman can take care of her kids and home better. It is also not uncommon for women to get out of turn treatment at the market or offices so that they can leave sooner. I can go on but there is no point. Let's just say that aside from some extreme examples like Saudi and the Taliban (both of whom had the same idealogy) in practice women's lives in the east is not as bad as Americans think it is. Nor is the American's lives as good as they think it is.
