Maybe you will be able to find some constructive comments from any politicians re NK...Constructive thoughts from politicians are certainly welcome, even novel.

I don't think you will find any constructive comments on this issue from politicians of any ideological stripe, especially during a campaign. Politicians are expected to deliver answers and solutions. If there's no clear-cut answer, they will waffle and babble, which is why they waffle and babble so much.

It would be nice to hear a politician say that there is no clear solution to the Korean problem, and that all we can do is to try to keep the neighbors united in a functional coalition, apply sustained pressure on various fronts, and rely on deterrence. You probably won't hear it, though, because it's not what the electorate wants to hear.

Do you have any thoughts as to what President Bush will be able to accomplish by going to Indonesia? Especially in view of the recent terrorism in Bali?

It's not likely that the visit will accomplish anything concrete, or that it is intended to. More a matter of showing the flag, I'd say. The Indonesian government has been fairly diligent in pursuing Islamic militants, but that's not because they are on our side: the militants are also a threat to them. They cannot by any means be considered a reliable ally, and we have to be careful about sending military aid to a country whose armed forces have as little concern for the rights of their citizens as Indonesia's do. That sort of thing has bounced back in our faces before.
