India looks better economically. But I don't trust India socially. The culture is still running on class and a lot of hate.

True, but the booming economy will help to mitigate that, especially if it begins to trickle down. It's harder to get comfortable people riled up over racial and religious issues. Not impossible by any means, but harder.

Think of how rich India would be if it had gone Japan's way in 1945 economically.

Probably true, but entirely hypothetical. Given India's diversity and history - quite the opposite of Japan's - it's a miracle that the place hasn't disintegrated.

Care to expand on that a wee bit ? As I recall, wasn't until the 1960s that equality of vote was acceptable int the US. class/caste/color - all discriminatory practices.

In 1945, the land called India (which included Pakistan and Bangladesh) was a British Colony. And they paid their contributions in WW2.
