As always, hindsight is 20/20. I'm not sure that what Roosevelt did significantly prolonged the depression, but I doubt that it helped. It took a world war to end it.

Nobody knew what to do. Roosevelt is remembered well because he chose a direction and followed it with enthusiasm and belief. It may well have been the wrong direction - all directions may have been wrong - but in times of crisis people would rather be led in circles than not led at all.
