Some European governments supported the Iraq policy to one extent or another, many did not. But the popular sentiment largely against US policy wasn't induced by the political leaders. The idea that Europe has to sit at America's feet and purr in gratitude is way out of date, that was my point.

I agree that most Americans rarely give much thought to anyone outside the US. But that didn't stop the flood of insults about the French people (not just the French government) when it became fashionable.
