> Human Rights are the basic rights of ALL people

Then perhaps you can enlighten us to where these rights were first declared (hint: it was over 2500 years ago and there is a copy of them in the UN for your viewing pleasure).

> the middle east fails these standards miserably when it comes to women

As oppose to when it comes to their own men? Do you care to look up the numbers and see how much undue pressure is on women compared to their male counterparts?

> you don't have to be there, live there, interview a person to form a conclusion

How absurd! Of course you do. The totality of life cannot be judged out of the context of the greater society or purely based on headline news read through the prejudices of your own culture. You remind me of the missionaries in New Guinea who scared the natives to wear cloths. The results was many of them died of pneumonia as the cloth stayed wet after the rain. There is a lesson there for you and for all other know-it-all-my-way-is-best-for-everyone-everywhere people.

> but you knew that

How arrogant and blind to see only one side to everything.

BTW, you still haven't told me if you mutilated your own sons after birth just because it is part of the dominant culture here. Before your go up in arms about the abhorring practice of female mutilation half way around the world, may be you should work on your own society first.

> of course this entire discussion started by my mentioning the treatment of middle eastern women in a post regarding the fact that October is National Breast Cancer Month in America

No. It started when you arrogantly broad-brush painted hundreds of millions of people whom you have never met and know next to nothing about. You then congratulated yourself by saying yours was decades ahead of theirs.

Tell me something. Do all the women who in America drive taxis, work in factories, perform janitorial duties, etc, do it for the sheer pleasure of it? Or do they do it because otherwise they could not make the ends meet? And if it is the latter, don't you think life would have been easier for them if their employer was understanding and gave them a break so they can attend their child's school or take the kid to doctor? In the middle east (at least in the parts that women do work) she can do so and will not even have a pay cut for the time away from work. How horribly sexist of them! I am sure your less fortunate sisters would abhor such sexist behavior in their employers.

"Human Rights are the basic rights of ALL people - regardless of their color, sex, age, national or ethnic origin, religious beliefs or economic status - to live in freedom and be treated fairly
they include the right to live in freedom and safety, to legal protection and a fair trial, the freedom of movement [leaving and entering your countries as you wish], freedom of religion, thought and expression, the right to ask another country to protect you from danger in your country, the right to marry and have a family, the right to own things..."

How true! But these rights had to be fought for by revolution against those assholes who usurped them to themselves.
