China Mobile's profit growth slows to 4.4% in Jan-Sep
By Roland Lim, Channel NewsAsia

China Mobile, the biggest mobile phone company by subscribers, has reported its slowest pace of growth in more than four years due to tariff cuts and new users spending less.

Net profit for the first nine months rose 4.4 percent on-year to 26.2 billion yuan, or US$3.2 billion.

The company signed-up 17 million new subscribers, bringing the total number to 135 million as at September.

Average revenue per user fell only slightly from 104 yuan to 103 yuan.

The results were disappointing for a company that had grown annual revenues at an average of 50 percent in the past four years.

But this was not the first quarterly decline in profits for China Mobile; last quarter, net profit fell by 5 percent as well.

So analysts say, it merely confirms investor fears that the mobile giant's growth rate is slowing after years of expansion.
