Interwoven, SBI Offer Brand Portal

Interwoven and partner SBI have launched what they call a brand portal solution.
Enterprise content management (ECM) specialist Interwoven's contribution to the solution is digital asset management (DAM) from MediaBin, which Interwoven acquired this summer. SBI, meanwhile, offers consulting expertise, particularly in the realm of interactive marketing. SBI, incidentally, is where Internet-era high-flyer Razorfish ended up, and is responsible for brand campaigns for Adidas and Microsoft (namely, the upcoming Office release). Large campaigns such as these are where the brand portal could add value, by centralizing access to and dispersing rich content.

How does DAM and consulting add up to a portal? It helps to keep in mind that Interwoven isn't a portal provider but is referring to either the presentation layer of MediaBin's DAM functionality or an incumbent portal. It's also an issue of messaging, with Interwoven eager to highlight the role of front ends, sometimes pegged as a weak part of DAM.

Brian Meek, director of product marketing at Interwoven, spells out the goal. "We want to get people thinking of the big picture around DAM," he says. "Get content under control and get it where everyone can gain access to it." Clearly, Interwoven's ECM and DAM abilities cover the control part, and access can be handled either through the MediaBin interface or through another portal.

The idea of putting together back-end tools and a front-end interface and tying it to a particular process is a new sales pitch for portal providers. One example is the Sarbanes-Oxley Accelerator offered by business process management (BPM) specialist HandySoft and portal vendor Plumtree.

You can say this is only small business but how many times have we seen smaller cheaper solutions eclipse the high end players in tech. Intuit is the other guy who plays at the low end who is grabbing share.
