Don't get me started on the sad state of officiating football.

How is it that I can see so many bad calls & non-calls live & before any replays are even shown? Then consider there are so many ref's on the field who only have responsibility for a small portion of the field. And in Division I & Pro football, these guys are supposed to be the absolute cream of the crop - well trained - many years of experience - spending many hours reviewing tape of their last game & the next teams they are going to officiate. These guys are supposed to know every rule inside & out, plus know the tendencies of the teams they are currently officiating.

It wouldn't be so bad if the ref's were consistent in making the bad/questionable calls both ways, but too often they don't. There are too many games that the ref's have a hand in the final outcome because they made more than one horrific call &/or non-call. All too frequently, they also made precisely the opposite call when the other team was in the same situation.

They also seem to be equally inept at marking forward position - sometimes being off by 5 or 6 feet when the guy being tackled is right by a hash mark with the line judge standing within 15 feet of the play. I mean really? What kind of judgement is needed when the player is tackled & the ball is just beyond the hash mark for the 36 yard line (with his entire body & the ball clearly at or beyond the 36 yard line) right in front of the line judge, but he places the ball inside the 35 yard line, bringing up 4th down instead of an obvious 1st down???? Yet the same play happens when the other team has the ball & the ref places the ball near the 38 yard line. That's when I get riled up!

And I really get peeved when the replay shows one or more ref's right there watching the play unfold & still making the wrong call or no call at all, time & time again.

Some teams/receivers get away with offensive pass interference on almost every passing play & almost never get called. Some players on other teams get it called on them every time it even looks close.

Some teams get away with blatantly illegal down field blocking on pass defense on almost every play. Some teams get called almost every time there is any down field contact by their defense.

Some teams line up one or more players in the neutral zone on every defensive play & rarely, if ever, get a flag. Other teams get called for it the one time one guy does it in a game.

Some teams have obvious holding one almost every offensive play, but rarely get called (I've watched offensive linemen tackle defensive linemen & not get called). Other teams get called if a hand slips for a fraction of a second.

Etc., etc., etc. It's just too awful & too obvious to be coincidence IMO.
